Before You Start Developing...

Before you start developing the next big thing

Before you start developing the next big thing, you'll want to identify the specific problem you aim to solve.

Before you start develping the next big thing, you'll want to narrow your problem scope and add pessimistic bias.

Before you start developing the next big thing, you'll want to make sure the problem is something that is of importance to the world.

Adam Grant's venn diagram for starting a business.

Before you start developing the next big thing, you'll want to brainstorm a plethora of solutions to your problem, and prioritize rigorously.

Before you start developing the next big thing, you'll want to prototype and test the solution with real users.

Some other tips:

  1. Check out Design Sprint 2.0 for some tips for new startup founders.
  2. Prove that you have a Must-Have product that solves a real macro problem. E.g. can you get 10,000 people to like it on social media or sign up on a 1pager homepage?
  3. Share with the others why you plan to spend to contribute all of your time, energy, and interest into solving this problem.

Ask:

  1. [Gauge interest] Will you (or your founders) be sick of it long before it's done?
  2. [Gauge contribution level] Do you actively contribute to the industry that you're aiming to disrupt? If not, you're at risk of reinventing the wheel.
  3. [Gauge importance] Is solving this problem truly important? Are you willing to put money into it?
